To study all these phenomena in conditions of general non-equilibrium, open systems are represented by a simple structure of a molecular island between two leads. We treat this model using the non-equilibrium Green functions (NGF) method for a finite initial condition. We demonstrate that the non-interacting molecular bridge model captures well many features of general open quantum systems. Three stages of its non-equilibrium evolution, the first described by the full NGF description, the second ruled by the asymptotically exact generalized master equation and the third governed by a Markovian master equation, are delineated and related to each other.}",

For processes embedded in a host process, a universal treatment of the correlated initial conditions based on the formalism of partitioning in time allows to express their self-energy including the ``irregular{''} correlation part in terms of the known properties of the host process. abstract = "{Recent developments in technologies and experiments enable LIS to observe dynamical behavior of very small quantum systems under conditions when it is sensitive to system parameters, internal interactions, the environment and the external time-dependent fields. This contribution deals with the status and perspectives of description of such truly non-equilibrium quantum many body systems using the non-equilibrium Green's functions (NGF). The basic aim of this approach is to describe time development of the many-body system out of equilibrium from its initial state over its transient dynamics to its long time asymptotic evolution. The early stages of the transient evolution Will be characterized for a broad class of the initial conditions generated in the course of Keldysh switch-on states. Gradual loss of initial correlations due to interactions and related renormalization processes in the system may, under favorable conditions, give rise to the evolution stage expressible in terms of non-equilibrium quasi-particles. This permits to reduce the description of the system behavior to a quantum transport equation. The consistency of such approximations for NGF may be judged by checking the non-equilibrium version of transport Ward identities. These identities follow from the gauge invariance of the 1st kind for NGF. To cover the whole time domain of the transient, we obtain the non-equilibrium Ward identities for NGF with initial conditions included. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.}",

abstract = "{The simplest nanoscopic system, a molecular bridge consisting of a molecular island with one or few electronic or vibronic levels coupled to non-interacting leads can be treated using non-equilibrium Green's functions (NGF). We follow the well known procedure of Jauho, Wingreen and Meir (JWM). In the present work, we concentrate on the little investigated transient behavior of the molecular bridge undergoing abrupt changes. The transient process depends on the initial conditions at a finite time which may incorporate initial correlations. As an example, we study the electron response to Sudden connecting the molecule to one or both leads. To obtain explicit solutions, we neglect all interactions at the island, whose role is mimicked by the island-leads coupling. We explore this analogy and obtain a complete Solution for the transient NGF for arbitrary ``initial correlations{''} represented by off-diagonal coherences between the initial electron state of the island and of the leads. This direct one-electron Solution is confronted with the field theoretic approach in the particular case of the switch-on states, for which the initial correlations result from the previous history of the system. This is formally captured by the partitioning-in-time of the NGF, which we combine with the JWM theory. It is the virtue of partitioning method to express the transient NGF in terms of the building blocks of stationary-state NGF with zero, one or both leads connected. The direct and the partitioning solutions are reduced explicitly from one to the other, clarifying thus the meaning of the singular terms of the self-energy for correlated initial conditions. abstract = "{This paper summarizes the present views on construction of the electron quantum transport equations based on the Non-Equilibrium Green's Functions approach. The basic tool is the so-called Ansatz decoupling; one Ansatz family stems from the original Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz and is suitable for extending the quasi-particle picture of the Landau theory out of equilibrium. The other family based on the Generalized KB Ansatz is appropriate for short time transients. The physical and formal context of the Ansatzes is analyzed; the most important question explored is the status of the Reconstruction Theorems, reducing a full description of a non-equilibrium system to a dynamic theory in terms of one-particle quantities. A comparison is made between the Time Dependent Density Functional Theory and the properly renormalized NGF formalism. There is a close relationship between both formalisms. Nonequilibrium Green's functions are reduced to GME if the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz is applied. This Ansatz has been used with success both to non-linear transport and to optical transients in semi-conductors; further progress is linked with its extension to a family of the Causal Ansatzes, differing primarily in renormalization of the propagators. For the switch-on non-equilibrium states, generated by a perturbation from equilibrium, the renormalization to the dark dressed Green's function followed by calculation of the induced self-energies is a productive direction. It also circumvents the problem of correlated initial conditions, far from a general solution otherwise. Such initial conditions appear as incompatible with a Causal Ansatz in general. The presently available formalism permits to study a transient process in the whole time range using the complete NGF, but making a flexible Ansatz-based reduction appropriate to the stage of dynamic evolution. The corresponding acoustic impedance is utterly different from that of the static interface. In particular, the system being open, the energy of an in-plane polarized wave is no longer conserved, the work of the external pulling force being partitioned between frictional dissipation and gain (of either sign) of coherent acoustic energy. Large values of the friction coefficient favor energy gain, while velocity strengthening tends to suppress it. An interface with infinite elastic contrast (one rigid medium) and v-independent (Coulomb) friction exhibits spontaneous acoustic emission, as already shown by Nosonovsky and Adams {[}Int. J. Eng. Sci. 39, 1257 (2001)]. But this pathology is cured by a moderately large V strengthening of friction, or, for systems with not too large friction coefficients, by any finite elastic contrast. We show that (i) positive gain should be observable for rough-on-flat multicontact interfaces and (ii) a sliding shear band in a granular medium should give rise to sizable reflection, which opens a promising possibility for the detection of shear localization.}",

This leads tu kinematical correlations in the motion of electrons and holes analogous to exciton effects, This mechanism, known to affect the linear optical response, is presently shown to act also in the non-linear regime induced by strong short light pulses. A direct numerical solution of the Kadanoff Baym equations for non-equilibrium Green functions (with a self-consistent and conserving single-site approximation for the self-energy) is used to study correlation in tire electron and hole photoexcited populations, and also an additional transient light-induced band hybridization which modifies the full optical vertex.}",

We use nonequilibrium Green functions employing the field-dependent self-consistent Born approximation. The propagators and the particle correlation function are obtained by a direct numerical solution of the Dyson equations in differential form. For the purely elastic scattering in our model system the solution procedures for the retarded propagator and for the correlation function can be decoupled. The propagator is used as an input in calculating the correlation function. Numerical results combined with a cumulant expansion permit one to separate in a consistent fashion the dark and the induced parts of the self-energy. The dark behavior reduces to propagation of strongly damped quasiparticles; the field induced self-energy leads to an additional time nonlocal coherence. The particle correlation function is formed by a coherent transient and an incoherent back-scattered component. The particle number is conserved only if the field induced coherence is fully incorporated. The transient polarization and the energy balance are also obtained and interpreted.}",

The presence of an underlying long range order enables us to build an effective medium description, which incorporates the radial fluctuations of the contact forces acting on a single site, Due to the nonlinearity of Hertz elasticity. self-consistency results in a highly nonlinear differential equation for the ``equation of state{''} linking the effective stiffness of the array with the applied pressure, from which Sound velocities are then obtained. The results are in excellent agreement with existing experimental results and simulations in the high- and intermediate-pressure regimes. It emerges from the analysis that the departure of upsilon(L)(P) from the ideal P(1/6) Hertz behavior must be attributed primarily to the fluctuations of the stress field, rather than to the pressure dependence of the number of contacts.}",

Even a crudely schematic form of the model reproduces the time strengthening of the static friction force and the velocity weakening of the steady motion dynamic one. We show that it is possible to construct the adiabatic electron self-energy as a sequence of self-energies for constant illumination parametrically dependent on the transient illumination strength. These are obtained by mapping the problem on a well known alloy case with an effective band hybridisation. Main effects concentrate to a narrow energy region around the one-photon resonance. We study in detail the behavior of the self-energy in this region in dependence on the basic model parameters. An important question is the occurence of the optically induced gap. Both the numerical analysis and an analytical treatment demonstrate a delayed formation of the gap in comparison with the pure crystal case, with a gradual distortion of the electronic structure around the resonance.
