Porous imidazolates and molecular ferroelectrics-synthesis and crystal structure determination

In the scope of the investigations of metal-organic compounds, several new crystal structures have been determined by X-ray powder diffraction, both at the laboratory diffractometer and in-situ high-temperature diffraction under the synchrotron radiation.

New high-temperature polymorph of NaIm, stable even at room temperature, contains imidazolate sheets with sodium atoms located in between those layers where sodium atoms might prove to be quite mobile-suitable for applications such as solid-state electrolytes. Pores of 50 Å3 suggest possible application for gas sorption/separation.

Additionally, a new family of mixed bimetallic imidazolates AMIm3 (A=Na, K; M=Mg, Mn) has been discovered. Both bimetallic imidazolate compounds have the imidazolate ligand connected to four metal cations forming a complex 3D network with channels running along the c-direction, thus showing the similar sorption potential because of the empty volume of around 30 Å3 incorporated inside the channels.

The novel molecular ferroelectric, triethylmethylammonium tetrachloroferrate(III) ([N(C2H5)3CH3][FeCl4]) was also discovered. These results highlight the outstanding progressive increase of dielectric permittivity above Tc = 363 K for ~360 % at 100 kHz and symmetry-breaking process tackled through the crystallographic information extracted from solely XRPD data.
