Advances and Challenges in Single-Molecule Electron Transport
In the past 20 years we have seen an impressive volume of theoretical and experimental work where a single molecule was attached to a pair of leads. Electronic transport properties of these single-molecule junctions have been widely measured by several techniques, including mechanically controllable break junctions, electromigration break junctions, and by means of scanning tunneling microscopes. In parallel, many theoretical tools have been developed and refined for describing such transport properties and for obtaining numerical predictions. In this field, dubbed "Molecular Electronics", time is ripe to critically evaluate what has been achieved, understood, and detect spots where our knowledge might be incomplete [1]. In my talk I will review basic experimental and theoretical techniques, discuss in which situations they tend to agree, and point to the sources of the discrepancies. I will (selectively) summarize cases where new qualitative understanding has been achieved and conclude with new developments.
