The interest on topological materials comes mainly from the fact that topologically protected states of matter are unusually robust: they cannot be destroyed by small changes in system parameters. On the other hand, inducing magnetism into topological insulators is appealing for the application of exotic phenomena. Topological antiferromagnetic states can, once realized at room temperature, enable more stable nano-spintronic devices that dissipate less energy and have new functionalities related to unique symmetries, or to the possibility of tuning by coupling to the antiferromagnetic order. Recently, the long-desired class of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators reported its first member: MnBi2Te4 was predicted and observed as the first AFM topological insulator. This Bi2Te3-derivative compound has a periodic Mn sublattice in its structure, which makes it different from numerous former attempts on external doping on the Bi2Te3. In this talk, I will give a brief overview on the properties and challenges of the modular series (Bi2Te3)n (MnBi2Te4) based on this compound.
