Structural, Optical and Magnetic Studies of Doped Zinc Sulphide Quantum Dots

 

Undoped II-VI semiconductor Zinc Sulphide quantum dots (ZnS QDs), Vanadium doped ZnS QDs (Zn1-xVxS where x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15), and Manganese doped ZnS QDs (Zn1-yMnyS where y = 0, 0.02, 0.06, 0.10) were synthesised using simple co-precipitation method. P-XRD was used to confirm the phase of the samples, further supported by the SAED patterns. Calculated crystallite size using Debye-Scherrer relation was found to be 1.7-2.3nm, exhibiting strong size confinement, which was confirmed using HRTEM analysis. UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy patterns of the samples exhibited blue-shift compared to bulk material, and energy band gap in the range of 3.9-4.1eV was found using Tauc plots. PL emission spectroscopy patterns confirmed the existence of surface defects in the synthesised QDs. XPS and VMS studies were conducted on the Zn1-xVxS (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) QDs in an effort to understand and explain the observed ferromagnetic ground state of the doped samples.
