Principles, instrumentation and several examples of application of photon-in / photon-out spectroscopy from ID26 and ID20 beamlines of the ESRF will be presented in the talk. Crystal-based emission spectrometers used in the technique offer an instrumental energy bandwidth that is in the order of the lifetime broadenings and thus provide an excellent element-selective and chemical-state-sensitive probe of local coordination and electronic structure.
Large solid angle of detection and a background-free signal combined with the necessary energy resolution allow to study the chemical state of very dilute chemical species in complex systems, determine local structure distortion and distinguish different ligands of the analyte.
Photon energies in the range of 2 to 20 keV permit in-situ and operando studies (heterogenous catalysis, electrochemistry, nanoparticle formation in liquids) to establish (chemical) structure-function relationships with K edges of 3d transition metals (TM), L edges of 4d TM and rare earth elements being studied most often. The examples shown will include also recent results from the tender X-ray range (2 - 5 keV) spectrometer, a unique instrument where studies with K emission lines of light elements, M lines of 4d and L lines of 5d transition metals are possible.
